In our everyday lives, we hear stories of individuals who ‘survive and conquer.’ It is important to recognize these accomplishments and learn from those who have gone before us. In order to survive, one may face physical, emotional, and social difficulties that draw on their inner resources to overcome obstacles. Research an individual that meets the criteria of ‘surviving and conquering’.

In 1996 there were two main climbing companies involved in the Everest disaster:
-Adventure Consultants
-Mountain Madness
While both groups are considered expedition guiding companies, there are a few differences between
them. Just like with any other business, a customer should ‘shop around’ a bit.
Your tasks:
1.) Research the website developed by the Adventure Consultants, whose founder and guide leader
was Rob Hall. Adventure Consultants website: www.adventureconsultants.com. (To start, click on "Explore", "About Us + ", then "Difficulty Rating")

Dual-Entry Journal (Quotes and Responses) [CR9.1a (b)]
As we go through the novel- The Marrow Thieves, you will complete a Dual-Entry Journal. As you read, you will collect quotes which either:
a.) you feel strongly about
b.) evokes an emotional response or memory for you
Maybe the quote stirs up a memory for you, makes you feel good, makes you question something, or causes any other particularly strong reaction.
Tasks:
1) Split a piece of paper in half vertically (so you have a left side of the page and a right side of the page)
2) At the top of the left column, write QUOTE
3) At the top of the right column, write RESPONSE
4) In the left column, you will record quotes (be sure to include the page number the quote comes from) from the novel that affect you in some way. In the right column, you will write down why you chose this quote and explain why it's important/what it makes you think of/why you chose it.
*EXAMPLE:
Quote: "He yelled around the house, into the front yard, and into the van, covering all sounds of a small escape in the trees." (pg. 4)
Response: This quote makes me feel amazed that a brother would let himself be captured and also make noise so the other brother can escape. That's crazy, and I wonder what my brother would do. I wonder what I would do in the same situation.
*NOTE: You should be making at least 1 entry for every chapter

The setting of our novel has been described as a dystopia. But, what IS dystopia??
We're going to take a look at some pictures of ways environments around the world have changed, due to Climate Change. Then we're going to record our thoughts and observations, based on the pictures.
Your Tasks:
1.) Using the following link, scan through the pictures and read the captions that go along with them (you may have to copy and paste this link into your internet browser)
